The General Medical Council (GMC) protects, promotes and maintains the health and safety of patients by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine. Their vision is to safeguard the highest standards of medical ethics, education and practice, in the interests of patients, public and profession.

The GMC has four main functions:

  • Keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors.
  • Fostering good medical practice.
  • Promoting high standards of medical education.
  • Dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practice is in doubt.
