The European Parkinson's Disease Association (EPDA) was formed June 1992 in Munich with a membership of nine European Parkinson's patient organisations. Many years later, its membership has increased to 39 countries. It is a non-political, non-religious and non-profit making organisation concerned with the health and welfare of people living with Parkinson's disease and their families.
It has provided an important forum to work in partnership and collaboration with European organisations, both patient and neurological, the European Commission, the World Health Organisation, the World Federation of Neurology and the pharmaceutical industry. This partnership has enabled the development of research projects into quality of life issues, and conferences for multidisciplinary teams and people with Parkinson's of any age.
Seeks to:
- Establish the extent of Parkinson's disease in Europe
- Provide and continually update medical and caring best practice
- Make this information readily available to patients and carers of all walks of life throughout Europe
- Offer people with Parkinson's and their families, through information technology and international networking, information and assistance
- Promote and encourage co-operation between scientific and other professional groups enabling advancement of health
- Motivate, promote and support new and existing national organisations to provide optimum care and rehabilitation
- Promote co-operation and exchange of experiences between the member associations.
- To promote international understanding of Parkinson's disease, enabling people living with Parkinson's and their families to draw on best caring practice world-wide, to access the latest medical and surgical advice and thus make informed choices to achieve the best quality of life possible.
