The Independent Midwives Association (IMA) was founded in 1985. Its members work outside the NHS yet support its aims and ideals. As practitioners, midwives can take full responsibility for the care of childbearing women. Independent Midwives book women mainly for home births, providing full ante natal, labour and post natal care, liasing with other health practitioners if and when necessary. A professional service is provided giving continuity of care and informed choice whether clients are at home or in hospital. Members of the Association have many years of experience including natural childbirth at home, water birth and have used many alternative therapies in pregnancy and during labour.
