The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments, based at the Craighalbert Centre, is the Scottish national centre, nursery, pre-school and school for young children with cerebral palsy. The Centre was created as an additional choice for parents with children with cerebral palsy. The Centre is a grant aided special school, receiving a direct grant from the Scottish Executive Education Department. The Centre combines the principles of conductive education, with national advice on the curriculum in Scotland, to teach the children independence, everyday activities and life skills.

Staff work closely with the family to create an environment for learning both at home and at the Centre. Children who are unable to attend on a daily basis, however, can stay within the care of their family in one of the three houses owned by the Centre. Short term accommodation is also available within the Centre building.

Aims of the Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments:

  • To assist others in providing education-based conductive education for children with motor impairments.
  • To work closely with the families of these children.
  • To advance the knowledge and skills of the Centre's staff and others in the education of children with motor impairments, through developing theory and practice.
  • To play an active role in staff development for conductive education of children with motor impairments, through developing theory and practice.
  • To work in partnership with other agencies in the promotion of knowledge and good practice in the teaching of children with motor impairments.
  • To contribute towards research and to assist development of provision for children with motor impairments.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.
