NATLL's member groups serve over 120,000 families nationwide. The UK National Association, a registered charity, was founded in 1972 and in 1983 adopted the campaign title Play Matters. Toy Libraries loan carefully chosen, good quality toys to families with young children. Some provide specially adapted toys and equipment for children with special needs. They also offer a befriending, supportive service to parents and other carers. Leisure libraries provide equipment for young adults with special needs. NATLL services include the following.
- Providing information to members, professionals, parents and carers on toys appropriate to needs, location of toy or leisure libraries, starting and running a toy or leisure library.
- A range of publications on various aspects of play is available including: toy guides to help parents and professionals choose the right toy for their children - including those with particular needs and disabilities; learning through play related to desirable outcomes and the national curriculum.
- Training courses and conferences.
