The Centre for Social and Communication Disorders was set up in 1991 by the National Autistic Society. It was the first centre in the country to provide a complete diagnostic, assessment and advice service for children, adolescents and adults with social and communication disorders throughout the UK. Features of the Centre are as follows.
- The staff aim to make a detailed diagnosis and assessment of the skills and disabilities of each person seen and to give advice on services needed.
- The Centre accepts referrals of children and adults of all ages. Although most of those seen have had autistic spectrum disorders, some have had other conditions.
- The Centre is an ordinary family house with a comfortable atmosphere and a garden. Each family is seen for a whole day. Parents may bring their other children and are encouraged to invite someone from their local health authority.
- Assessment is done by psychologists and psychiatrists with parent interviews, formal and informal testing methods, and liaison with physicians in the local community of the person concerned.
- Findings and conclusions are explained; educational and other services needed are discussed. Written reports are produced which can help parents arrange for provision of the appropriate educational, health and social services.
The Centre is not part of the National Health Service and receives no direct government funding. Appointments at the centre are funded through the statutory authorities.
