Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland was established in 1978 by Women's Aid groups to facilitate further development. There are 10 Women's Aid groups throughout Northern Ireland, with 12 refuges, aftercare projects and information/advice centres with a 24-Hour Domestic Violence Helpline (number above). Women's Aid Federation has the following aims.

  • The provision of refuge and on-going support to women and children suffering abuse within the home.
  • To encourage a process of self-help and recognition of the emotional needs of children involved in domestic violence.
  • Raising awareness among all agencies of domestic violence and its relationship to gender and unequal power relationships.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
