Epilepsy affects 60,000 children and young people in the UK and is the most common serious neurological disorder in childhood. Of those, around 10% will suffer serious regression in their learning and have additional conditions including autistic spectrum disorder, obsessional or challenging behaviour. For young people with complex epilepsy, specialised care, education, assessment, rehabilitation and treatment is crucial.
The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE), a registered charity, is the major provider of specialised services to young people aged 5 to 25 throughout the UK. The NCYPE provides day and residential special education services for students through its St Piers School and Further Education College. Residential provision is offered for up to 52 weeks a year to provide additional help and support for those who have the most complex needs. It also offers a range of childhood epilepsy diagnostic, assessment, outreach and rehabilitation services to assist children aged 3 and upwards from across the UK to better cope with their epilepsy while continuing to be supported in their local communities. The charity also provides a range of health information for young people, parents, carers, health and education professionals and training courses. Helpline: 01342 831 342 Mon - Fri, 9am - 1pm, or email: enquiry@ncype.org.uk.
The NCYPE works in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust and the Institute of Child Health.
