JABS aims to promote understanding about immunisations and to offer basic support to any parent whose child has a health problem after vaccination. The organisation neither recommends nor advises against vaccinations but wants comprehensive information to be available to all parents so that they can make an informed decision on the benefits and risks of vaccination. Some of the main issues JABS is concerned with are as follows:
- JABS accepts that the majority of children suffer no ill-effect from immunisation but is concerned that very few studies have been done on the long-term effects of vaccinations.
- JABS feels that the current method of reporting adverse reactions is ineffective and they are arguing for a change in the system to ensure that all reactions are reported.
- JABS feels that the present vaccine damage payment scheme is inadequate.
- JABS wants justice for vaccine damaged children and campaigns for a legal right to compensation with reinstatement of Legal Aid for all affected families.
JABS has had contact from over thousands of families and has created a network so that parents can contact others: for moral support and to remove the feeling of isolation; to compare notes and share information; to pass on scientific information on to other parents and solicitors where appropriate. Families can join JABS for an annual fee. JABS is also involved in the following activities.
- Conducting an on-going survey of children whose parents consider that they had an adverse reaction to a vaccination.
- Production of reports from these surveys to pass to parents, other support groups, doctors, health visitors, Department of Health.
- Raising awareness of vaccine issues.
- Working through political channels to amend the 1979 Vaccine Damage Payment Act.
- Dealing with enquiries from all areas.
