Galactosaemia is a rare, inherited condition in which the sugar galactose is present in the blood in excessive amounts due to an enzyme deficiency. Treatment consists of removing galactose (ie all milk and milk products) from the diet as far as possible. Features of the Galactosaemia Support Group include the following:

  • The Group brings families with galactosaemic children (and adult galactosaemics) into contact with each other and offers support where most needed.
  • Through the Group the families are able to share experiences, help each other with problems and exchange information and ideas.
  • The Group is in contact with many food companies and obtains lactose-free lists of their products.
  • The Group aims to promote an awareness of galactosaemia within the medical and teaching professions, the food and pharmaceutical industries and the general public.
  • The Group raises funds to finance research into galactosaemia.
