FAIR was founded in 1976 in response to requests for help and information from distressed relatives and friends of young adults who had been recruited into a cult. FAIR's files now contain information on many groups. There are hundreds of cults and fringe groups operating in the UK. FAIR is a voluntary body composed of parents, ex-cultists, doctors, clergy and others. It is not committed to any specific religious or political stance and sees the problem of cult involvement in a human rights and social concern context. FAIR's aims and activities are as follows.

  • Offering support to families and individuals who have been adversely affected by cult involvement.
  • Belief that welfare and unity of family is of vital importance in maintaining the quality of life within society.
  • Not seeking to curtail political or religious freedom but aiming to help restore cult members to a state of mind in which rational decisions can be made.
  • Belief that an individual's decision to leave a cult must be their own.
  • Publishing quarterly newsletter, fact sheets, warning leaflets and information on cults and their characteristics.
  • Commitment to a policy of education in order to raise awareness of the use of undue influence.
  • Alerting government departments, the media and public bodies.
  • Part of an international network providing information and support for cult-affected individuals.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
