The Centre for Accessible Environments gives advice and information on making buildings and places accessible to all users, including disabled and older people, and on enhancing quality in design. Its purpose is to collect and disseminate information on accessible building design, advance understanding of the environmental needs of disabled and older people, promote and publicize good practice, and improve the quality of building and product design for all.

The Centre is a technical information and training resource for the construction industry, providers of goods and services, the care professions and disabled people. The Centre provides a forum for collaborative dialogue between providers and users on how buildings and places can best be shaped to be accessible to all.

  • The Centre answers enquiries on all aspects of designing for accessibility, including compliance with Part M of the Building Regulations and the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). This service is free of charge.
  • The Centre offers a wide range of access training, often in partnership with other organisations and involving disabled people. Contact the Centre's training co-ordinator for full details.
  • The Centre's House Adaptation Advisory Service can put individuals in touch free of charge with Centre members across the country who are design professionals with expertise in access provision. Contact the Centre for more details on this.
  • The Centre produces a range of technical design guides and other publications. A publication list is available from the Centre.
  • The Centre also provides consultancy work and undertakes paid access audits of buildings and premises.
  • The Centre provides a base for the National Register of Access Consultants.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
