The Disabled Photographers' Society is a national charity which encourages disabled people to take an active interest in photography as a therapeutic and creative pursuit. It has members all over the UK and is run by unpaid volunteers. Membership is open to anyone with a registerable disability (it is not necessary to actually be registered) regardless of photographic experience. Schools, day centres, hospital groups and similar organisations are eligible for the special terms offered with group membership. The Society's activities include the following:

  • Acting as a source of information on photographic matters for the physically disabled.
  • Collecting surplus equipment and finding a useful place for it amongst disabled people.
  • Checking donated equipment where necessary and repairing where possible.
  • Researching methods of adapting equipment to meet the requirements of specific disabilities.
  • Running an advice service for members needing special camera supports for wheelchairs and putting them in touch with appliance manufacturers.

The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter which gives specialist information and provides an opportunity to exchange ideas. It also organises an annual public exhibition of members' work and awards licentiateships, associateships and fellowships.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
