Blissymbolics is a visual communication system which maintains a systematic logic. It can be used by young children as a basic communication and language development system, yet is equally suitable as a sophisticated communication medium for adults. The system is designed to help people with disabilities for whom learning to read or communicating is difficult. There are approximately 3000 children and adults in Britain who use Blissymbols to communicate. Computer programs and portable speech output devices can also be used with Blissymbols. Blissymbol Communications UK is a registered charity and is involved in the following activities.

  • To collate and disseminate information about the Blissymbol system.
  • To organise workshops to teach those working with Blissymbol users.
  • To advise on specific problems arising from symbol use.
  • To maintain standards for new materials and software.
  • To publish regular newsletters containing articles from teachers, therapists, parents and users.

The organisation is able to supply books, vocabulary charts and blank sheets and guides including Blissymbol Reference Guide, Teaching and Introducing Blissymbolics, Blissymbolics for Pre-school children, Communicating with Blissymbolics, Picture your Blissymbols. An order form listing all titles and prices is available from the address above.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
