The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa) is a registered charity founded in 1990 to address the problems of children growing up in families where one or both parents suffer from alcoholism or a similar addictive problem. This includes children of all ages, many of whose problems only become apparent in adulthood.
Nacoa has four broad aims:
- To offer information, advice and support to children of alcohol-dependent parents.
- To reach professionals who work with these children.
- To raise the profile of children of alcohol-dependent parents in the public consciousness.
- To promote research into:
- The particular problems faced by those who grow up with parental alcoholism.
- The prevention of alcoholism developing in the vulnerable group of children.
Nacoa publications include the following:
- Information for children of alcohol-dependent parents.
- Some mums and dads drink too much...and it's frightening. Does this happen to you?
- Making a difference - how you can help.
- Information for teachers.
- Information for young people.
Nacoa can provide a wide range of useful information, leaflets and contacts for support organisations. Any contact is strictly confidential and calls to the helpline are free.
