The Riding for the Disabled Association aims to provide the opportunity of riding and carriage driving for disabled people who might benefit in their general health and wellbeing. By the experience these individuals gain through their contact with horses and ponies it is hoped to create a greater sense of achievement and confidence which in turn will make their lives easier and more fulfilled. It has been identified by the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Therapeutic Riding (ACPTR) that RDA activities can prove beneficial to riders by exercising the body in a way that can only be achieved by the use of a horse. Riders and drivers can be any age - as young as three, with the oldest over 94.
The Association has many local groups and runs national and local holidays for its members which provide the opportunity to improve their skills and to get to know more about horse management. For some disabled people it is more practical to join in by driving a horse, pony or donkey accompanied by an able-bodied "whip". Visit their website for details of your local group.
