LINK is the major organisation in the UK providing services exclusively for adults experiencing the trauma of acquired profound deafness. Their services are delivered throughout the UK and include:

  • Intensive rehabilitation programmes for recently deafened adults and their families.
  • A network of outreach volunteers who are trained to offer support and information to newly deafened people in their communities.
  • A self-management programme for deafened people using trained peer educators, assisting people to regain control of their lives.
  • Social support groups. This is a national network of support groups run by deafened people for deafened people and their partners. The support groups give this marginalised group of adults a forum and assists them in their reintegration into the hearing world from which they have become isolated. This project includes an internet chat-room.
  • Support and training groups for cochlear implant users.
  • Training courses for professionals working in the field of rehabilitation for deafened adults, such as social workers, audiologists and hearing therapists.
  • Research into the effects of acquired profound deafness.
  • Membership scheme.
  • Magazine subscription.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
