JAMI (Jewish Association for the Mentally Ill) is the only Jewish charity concerned exclusively with mental illness, with the impact it has on the lives of those who suffer from it, including their families and all who care for them. JAMI provides essential day care, social work, advice, information and social activities for people affected by mental illness, including their families and carers.

JAMI was founded in 1989 by parents, relatives and friends of people with mental ill health. It offers a range of culturally specific services for Jewish people who have a severe and enduring mental illness.

The charity is recovery orientated and is committed to working alongside statutory services to provide a high quality community-based service which enables people to maximise their potential and take control of their own recovery.

Services JAMI provide include:

  • JAMI House - open to Jewish people over the age of 18 affected by enduring mental health problems, who have undergone a simple assessment procedure. Opportunities are offered for those who feel isolated and vulnerable to meet others who may share common difficulties. JAMI House provides a warm, welcoming place for people to spend time, where they can meet new friends in a supportive and non-judgemental stimulating environment. Many activities are available. The objective is to help people achieve more independence and regain their confidence.
  • JAMI Outreach - a group of young professionals who visit Jewish patients in psychiatric units. Training and group supervision is organised on a regular basis. Hospital and hostel visits have recently been introduced.
  • Befriending Service - carefully matches volunteers and service users to share in a social recreation programme. The purpose of the project is to help otherwise isolated people make use of local, social, cultural and educational facilities within their area and living skills.
  • JAMI Charity shop - run in order to raise the funds necessary to continue their work.
