The Philadelphia Association was founded in 1965 by RD Laing and others who were challenging traditional approaches to mental health. They emphasised the importance of attending to the individual's unique experience within a particular social context.
The Philadelphia Association's approach is influenced both by psychoanalytic thinking and the work of philosophers from existential and post-phenomenological perspectives. Psychoanalysts in the Association therefore recognise the diversity of people's expressions of distress. They aim to be sensitive to individual's own ways of speaking about their lives, acknowledging contradictions and complexity. This can open out new possibilities and changes in people's lives.
The Philadelphia Association can offer individual, couple, group and family psychotherapy by qualified, registered and experienced psychotherapists, all of whom are members or associate members of the Philadelphia Association and abide by its code of ethics. The Philadelphia Association is a member of the Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Section of the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy and has an agreed policy of professional practice.
