The Occupational and Environmental Diseases Association (OEDA), formerly SPAID, provides information on asbestos and the problems it causes, and advice to victims of asbestos disease and their families.

OEDA was registered with the Charity Commissioners in 1993 to build on the pioneering work of Nancy Tait who in 1978 set up the Society for the Prevention of Asbestosis and Industrial Diseases (SPAID). SPAID was among the pioneers who first drew attention to asbestos problems and risks, and now, as OEDA, continues to play a crucial role in alerting the public and government to new asbestos issues. Activities include the following.

  • Offers information and advice to victims on applications for DSS Industrial Benefits and claims for compensation.
  • Engages in research on the effects of asbestos in the home and environment.
  • Drives for improved safety and compensation legislation.
  • Alerts doctors, scientists, researchers, MPs and legal authorities to new information gathered from the families helped.
  • IIAC has recently endorsed OEDA's opinion based on its EM research that counts of asbestos fibres/bodies are unreliable and should not be used for the diagnosis of any asbestos-related disease.

OEDA produces a booklet, Asbestos Facts, available free (single copy) on receipt of an A4 self-addressed envelope with postage to cover 150g and also Asbestos in your home was published in 2006 - please send a SAE for a copy. Visit the website for any important updates.

The number of people made ill by asbestos continues to rise and more of them meet complex problems when seeking benefits and compensation, so OEDA is concentrating on asbestos issues: prevention, diagnosis, treatment and compensation.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
