Remap (Rehabilitation Engineering Movement Advisory Panels), formed in the 1960s at ICI Billingham by engineers, handymen and other workmen, is today an independent, registered charity operating in England and Wales with the following features.
- Remap is a unique charity which designs, manufactures and supplies technical aids to disabled people where there is no suitable commercial item. Remap will also modify commercial equipment to suit the needs of an individual. No charge is made to the disabled person.
- Many people with disabilities encounter problems in their daily lives which cannot be solved with standard commercial equipment despite the increasing range available. It is is this gap that Remap fills, bringing engineering and other skills to bear on one-off problems.
- Remap has over 2,000 members, all volunteers. The majority are professionally qualified engineers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, scientists, managers, technicians, craftsmen and members of the medical profession who form about 100 panels throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Remap does not ask those they help to pay. This is possible because Remap members work for nothing and often use unwanted or discarded industrial materials.
