Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is also known as Steele Richardson Olszewski syndrome. It is a neuro-degenerative disease affecting the brain stem and basal ganglia. Its progression varies from patient to patient slowly affecting vision, balance, swallowing and speech. Recent research indicates a prevalence of some 6 per 100,000 across the UK. Many are still mis-diagnosed as having Parkinson's disease or another neuro-degenerative disease. There is no effective treatment and no cure for PSP. Its cause is unknown but there may be a genetic component.
The PSP Association was set up in 1994 to:
- Provide information and support to afflicted families across Europe.
- Promote and sponsor research world-wide into PSP.
- Raise awareness of this disease, particularly amongst the relevant medical professionals across the UK.
To this end, the Association has established more than 30 support groups across the UK and also provides information to people worldwide. It runs a telephone counselling service across the UK and sends out to members three magazines each year. It holds annual symposiums for carers and biennial international medical workshops.
