Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall. Common cystitis is a urinary tract infection caused by bacteria and is usually treated with antibiotics. Unlike common cystitis, IC is believed not to be caused by bacteria, and does not respond to conventional antibiotic therapy. It is important to note, however, that IC is not a psychosomatic disorder, nor is it caused by stress.
The Cystitis and Overactive Bladder Foundation gives support to people with interstitial cystitis, bacterial cystitis, and overactive bladder. Its goals are as follows.
- The relief of sickness of persons suffering from overactive bladder and all forms of cystitis.
- To provide patients with overactive bladder and all forms of cystitis, their families and friends with contact with other sufferers in their area.
- The advancement of education amongst the general public and medical profession into the causes and treatment of overactive bladder and all forms of cystitis.
- To support research and ultimately find an effective treatment and cure for overactive bladder and all forms of cystitis.
Membership of the charity is open to everyone who suffers from overactive bladder or any form of cystitis, or is interested in furthering the work of the charity. The annual subscription fee is low. For further information contact the above address.
