The Institute is financially independent of both government and the drinks industry and is sponsored by the Alliance House Foundation.
The IAS provides services of information and education to the following groups: the general public, the helping professions, industry, commerce and trade unions. These services are provided in the following ways.
- A reference library and information service.
- The publication of factsheets, leaflets, reports, discussion papers.
- Conferences and seminars.
- Consultative assistance to industry and commerce in relation to occupational policies on alcohol problems and accompanying education and training courses.

The IAS publishes two quarterly magazines, UK Alcohol Alert and The Globe and can provide a mail order catalogue. The IAS has also provided the secretariat for Eurocare, an association of alcohol problem agencies operating within the European Union. Eurocare publications include: Alcohol Problems in the Family: A Report to the European Union; Medical Education in Alcohol and Alcohol Problems: A European Perspective.
