Positively Women is a national charity working to improve the quality of life of women and families affected by HIV by:
- Providing specialist support by woman living with HIV.
- Enabling women to make informed choices.
- Challenging stigma and discrimination.
Central to Positively Women is their ethos of support for women living with HIV by women living with HIV. Their work includes:
- One to one counselling, advice and advocacy delivered by HIV positive women via their national helpline or face to face at HIV clinics and voluntary organisations.
- Outreach support to women in prisons and hospitals.
- Specialist one to one and group support for parents and children affected by HIV.
- Training and mentoring aimed at enabling HIV positive women to take park in local and national service provision and decision-making.
- Support for HIV positive asylum seekers and refugees run in conjunction with Asylum Aid.
- Up to date information on HIV related issues for HIV positive women via treatment roadshows, national newsletter and website.
- Guidance and support to HIV and health organisations throughout the UK in the best provision of services for women living with HIV.
- Development through volunteering and work based training to build confidence and skills, and support in education and employment.
- Information and education around HIV for health and social care professionals.
- Group support led and managed by HIV positive women including treatment workshops and a drug and alcohol support group.
- Complementary therapies to help HIV positive women cope with the side effects of HIV treatments.
Positively Women aims to help women living with HIV overcome the barriers and to live healthier lives. All direct support is carried out by women who are themselves HIV positive and therefore have personal experience of the social and health implications of living with the virus. Positively Women often provides the first point of contact for a diagnosed woman with other HIV positive women. As well as offering emotional and practical support PW's staff are a clear demonstration that HIV positive women can continue to work and live fulfilled lives with HIV.
