The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) aims to prevent any form of child abuse or cruelty. Their activities include the following:
- 24hr advice.
- Network of child protection teams and projects.
- Information, leaflets, publications.
Throughout five regions in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Islands the NSPCC has over 180 teams and projects which work with children and families to help them overcome the effects of emotional, physical and sexual abuse and neglect. These teams and projects also work to try to prevent further abuse from happening. The NSPCC uses its independence to conduct special investigations into abuse, and undertakes assessment and therapy work. It also provides drop in centres for families, and offers preventive programmes and local training and consultancy for other professionals working with children who have suffered abuse.
The NSPCC child protection helpline is a free, national, 24-hour service which provides counselling, information and advice to anyone, including children, concerned about a child at risk. Call the helpline:
- if you are concerned about a child and do not know what to do for the best, or
- if family or other pressures are putting a child in danger, or
- if you are a concerned child or young person yourself
The helpline is staffed by experienced social work counsellors who will speak to you in confidence.
