Mencap is the leading UK charity working with children and adults with a learning disability.

Mencap represents the views and daily experiences of people with a learning disability and their families. It campaigns for equal rights by challenging discrimination and disadvantage, raising expectations, and removing barriers to social inclusion. It works closely with local and national government and the media to promote the rights of people with a learning disability.

Mencap directly improves the lives of people with learning disabilities through its services, which include residential, education and employment services, as well as leisure opportunities and individual support and advice.

Mencap is striving to achieve its vision of a world where all people with a learning disability have choice, opportunity and respect, with the support they need. It works to deliver change wherever these rights are compromised.

Services include:

  • Residential and housing services
  • Employment services via the Pathway Employment Service
  • Leisure services via National Federation of Gateway Clubs
  • Education at Mencap's three FE colleges
  • Information via the National Learning Disability Helpline and Information Service

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
