The Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) is a national charity which provides impartial advice and information about equipment/assistive technology designed to enable older and disabled people to live more independently.

Services offered by the DLF include the following:

  • The DLF helpline is a national service to the general public. Advisors answer enquiries directly over the telephone or send more detailed information by post or email. If the DLF is unable to answer enquiries they direct callers to other more appropriate organisations.
  • The Equipment Demonstration Centre, located at the above address, is a registered Disabled Living Centre. There is a wide range of equipment and aids for demonstration to older and disabled people, their families, carers, and allied healthcare professionals. The range includes electric and manual wheelchairs, electric scooters, stairlifts, riser-recliner chairs, walking aids, kitchen, bathing, toileting, manual handling, and children's equipment.
  • A qualified physiotherapist or occupational therapist will assess the user's needs and offer advice as to how they can be assisted through the use of equipment. Equipment is not sold or hired out. Call the helpline to make an appointment.
  • Enquiries can be answered by letter or email.
  • The DLF publishes a wide range of factsheets related to choosing and using equipment (available to download from their website). It also publishes a disability equipment directory, DLF Data, for anyone requiring regular access to product information. DLF Data is available in two formats; print (also known as The Hamilton Directory), and online.
  • The DLF has recently launched a new search and comparison website called 'Bathing made easy' which gives free, impartial advice and information about products such as baths, showers and grab rails. The website address is www.bathingmadeeasy.com.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
