Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common disabling neurological disorder among young adults. It affects some 85,000 people in the UK.

The MS Society is an organisation in the UK representing and working for those affected by MS. Founded in 1953 its five key aims for 2006-8 are to:

  • Fund and promote the best possible research into MS cause, cure and care.
  • Become the recognised source of consistent, high quality support and information to all people with MS.
  • Raise standards of MS care by working in partnership with professionals promoting equitable access to high quality services based on the needs of the individual.
  • Be the authoritative voice on MS, promoting the independence, dignity and self-determination of people with MS.
  • Ensure that people with MS are able to retain control of their lives and be fully involved in every aspect of their work.

The Society offers support for people with MS and their families. This includes publishing a range of evidence-based information about MS, statutory services, and other sources of support in both print and electronic formats.

The Society also has a network of 340 local branches which are run entirely by volunteers.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
