Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common disabling neurological disorder among young adults. It affects some 85,000 people in the UK.
The MS Society is an organisation in the UK representing and working for those affected by MS. Founded in 1953, it's five key aims for 2008-2012 are to:
- Fund and promote research into finding the cause of and cure for MS, and improving care and services for people affected by MS.
- Ensure that the MS Society produces up-to-date, accurate and accessible information on MS issues, tailored to meet the needs of people affected by MS.
- Provide support to all people affected by MS.
- Raise standards of care for people living with MS.
- Work to increase awareness of the devastating impact of MS on people's lives, influence decision-makers, ad inform about the help, support and services the MS Society can provide.
The Society also has a network of 340 local branches which are run entirely by volunteers.
