The Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is a national HIV and sexual health charity.

Their helpline, THT Direct, offers information, emotional support and advice to anyone living with HIV, affected by HIV indirectly or concerned about their sexual health.

THT Direct's advisers talk to callers about all kinds of subjects, including how HIV is passed on, HIV testing and STI screening, safer sex, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis), dealing with a positive diagnosis (including deciding who to tell), looking after your health (including understanding CD 4 counts and viral loads), treatments, discrimination, relationships, starting a family, employment, accessing health services, immigration, housing, benefits and the legal position surrounding HIV transmission. As well as the information and support available over the phone, THT Direct also maintain records of services available from THT and other organisations across the UK, so they can let you know what you can access in your area. The advisers also respond to emails and letters.

On a local level, THT has a network of centres in England, Wales and Scotland, which offer a variety of services, depending on local need. These services include counselling, African emotional support, support groups, community support volunteers, complementary therapies, information and advice, free condoms and resources, advice and advocacy and HIV testing. Contact details are available on the THT website.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
