Macmillan Cancer Relief helps people who are living with cancer.

By working closely with people with cancer, their families and communities, they aim to develop services which reflect people's real needs and wishes. They also share their expertise with a wide range of health and social care providers, leading by example and inspiring others to meet their standards.

Although best known for their nurses, their increasing range of services includes:

  • Macmillan health and social care professionals, including specialist Macmillan nurses, doctors, radiographers, physiotherapists, dietitians, and social workers who work in hospitals and the community to provide information, emotional support, symptom control, and pain relief for people living with cancer.
  • Information and support services, which provide quality information and emotional support to people affected by cancer, delivered locally or via the Macmillan CancerLine service.
  • Grants and money advice, which help people who are in financial difficulty as a result of their illness.
  • Carer support services, which offer practical help and emotional support for carers caring for people living with cancer in their own home.
  • Design and creation care centres: these healing environments use architectural and design principles which have been shown to improve people's response to treatment.
  • Self help and support services, which link people affected by cancer to a network of over 700 groups UK-wide; they also help new groups start up by providing free resources, consultancy, training and small grants.
  • Campaigning: by raising public awareness of issues affecting people living with cancer and actively engaging with politicians and decision-makers to effect change that will benefit them.
  • Education, development and support services, focus on all aspects of professional need, from the education of Macmillan healthcare professionals, to the provision of information resources to anyone who delivers care to people affected by cancer, including evaluations, action research, and market research.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
