The Brittle Bone Society was founded by a group of families in 1971 and subsequently became a registered charity. Its aims are to promote research into the causes and treatment of brittle bone diseases, and to provide practical support, advice and encouragement to patients and their relatives.

Through the Society affected families can get in touch with each other and share ideas on how to cope. Letters and telephone calls reassure them that they are not alone. The Society organises local meetings and an annual conference which enable families to meet and exchange ideas. A regular newsletter gives advice on living with brittle bones. The Society advises on grants and allowances, schooling and equipment and genetics. Some equipment is available through the NHS but many children need specialised powered wheelchairs not available through the NHS. The Society raises funds to meet these needs.

The Society now has knowledge of more than 3,500 sufferers in all parts of Britain and Ireland. Contact the Society for further information.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
