The United Kingdom's Disabled People's Council (UKDPC) - was formed in 1981, and is the national, representative body of organised disabled people in the UK. It is an umbrella body, comprising over 130 independent organisations run and controlled by disabled people.

UKDPC is the only national assembly which truly represents the interests of all disabled people, including people with physical and sensory impairments, as well as people who face multiple discrimination and oppression such as black and other ethnic disabled people, gay and lesbian disabled people, and disabled women. UKDPC also supports people with learning difficulties through its close links with People First, a member group of UKDPC.

The sole criterion for membership of UKDPC is that all of its constituent organisations must be 75% controlled by disabled people. UKDPC represents through its members over 300,000 people at the national level.

The UKDPC produces various publications and research reports relating to disability matters. Activities and issues of member organisations are co-ordinated on a computerised database. These include issues of local interest such as transport, housing, access, as well as issues of wider concern such as legislation and the international and national movement. The UKDPC can also put callers in touch with member groups and other organisations of disabled people who may be better equipped to answer any enquiries not covered by the UKDPC. The UKDPC website is also available to access membership group details.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
