Alcoholics Anonymous is a voluntary fellowship of men and women who help each other to become and stay sober by sharing experiences and giving mutual support. Members are helped to achieve sobriety by staying away from drink, one day at a time. Members may contact each other, and group meetings help to maintain support. It is not necessary to give your name when making initial contact, and no membership lists are kept.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Open meetings are held for members and interested relatives/friends etc, but closed meetings are for members only. There are over 3,000 meetings in the UK each week, and 40,000-50,000 members.
Each group is autonomous and self-supporting, but is linked to the general service office for literature and information. AA is in no way affiliated to any other organisation. AA is supported by the voluntary contributions of its members and groups. There are no membership records or follow-up procedures.
