AFASIC was founded in 1968 as a parent-led organisation to help children and young people with speech and language impairments and their families. AFASIC helps children and young people with a variety of expressive and receptive speech and language difficulties. Disorders with which AFASIC can help include: specific language impairment; language disorder or delay; semantic-pragmatic disorder; Asperger syndrome; selective mutism; phonological or articulatory difficulties; verbal dyspraxia.

AFASIC aims to promote understanding, acceptance, equal opportunities and the inclusion into society of children and young adults with speech and language impairments. It offers the following services:

  • The AFASIC helpline (number above) provides information about all areas of speech and language impairment and about speech and language therapy, education and benefits.
  • AFASIC's local groups offer parents / carers of these children the opportunity to meet socially and share experiences.
  • Training & conferences for both parents and professionals.

AFASIC publications include AFASIC News, published three times a year with the latest news in education and health. Other publications include the following:

  • Glossary sheets on speech and language impairment
  • Accessing speech and language therapy - a guide to the law
  • Choosing a school - a guide to educational options for children with speech and language impairments.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
