Severe Disablement Allowance

Severe Disablement Allowance is a benefit which was abolished for new claims in April 2001. However, many people continue to receive it.

Note: this leaflet gives a brief summary of Severe Disablement Allowance and is for guidance only. It does not cover all situations, nor is it a full statement of the law. Sources of further, more detailed information are given at the end.

Severe Disablement Allowance was for people under 65 and incapable of work, but whose National Insurance contributions were not enough to claim long-term Incapacity Benefit.

Severe Disablement Allowance standard rate is £59.45 per week (April 2011) plus additions for various circumstances. The rate usually increases each April. It is not taxable.

Can someone work while getting Severe Disablement Allowance?

Usually Severe Disablement Allowance stops if you start work, but check with your local Jobcentre Plus office for up-to-date rules. You can do a small amount of permitted work without your benefits being affected.
