About sodium aurothiomalate

Type of medicineDisease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD)
Used forRheumatoid arthritis
Also calledMyocrisin®
Available asInjection

Sodium aurothiomalate is a gold salt which can be used to relieve pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. It is injected into a muscle.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition caused by the body's own immune system attacking itself. Sodium aurothiomalate works by suppressing the over-reaction of the immune system, although the exact way in which it does this is not fully understood.

Sodium aurothiomalate helps relieve the symptoms and slows down the progress of rheumatoid arthritis; it will not cure the disease.
