Piracetam

  • Piracetam has a bitter taste. Swallowing the tablets with a glass of water or having a soft drink after taking the oral solution can help disguise the taste.
  • Drowsiness can be a side-effect of taking piracetam. Make sure your reactions are normal before doing things which could be dangerous if you were not fully alert.
  • Do not stop taking piracetam suddenly as this can cause problems.

About piracetam

Type of medicineUsed to control movement disorders
Used forCortical myoclonus
Also calledNootropil®
Available asTablets and oral solution

Piracetam acts on the central nervous system. It is thought to protect the part of the brain called the cerebral cortex against a lack of oxygen. The cerebral cortex is responsible for our thoughts and actions and plays a role in movement, reasoning, perception and recognition.

Piracetam is used alongside other medicines in the treatment of cortical myoclonus. This condition results in short involuntary movements, or muscle jerks, particularly in the arms and legs.

How to take piracetam

  • Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet.
  • Take piracetam exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • Piracetam is usually taken two or three times a day.
  • Piracetam tablets can be swallowed with a drink of water. Do not break or chew the tablets as piracetam has a bitter taste.
  • If you are taking the oral solution, drinking a glass of water or soft drink after taking your dose can help to take away the taste.
  • Try to take piracetam at the same times each day to avoid missing any doses.
  • If you forget to take a dose, take one as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose in which case skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Keep your regular doctor's appointment so your progress can be monitored.
