Ipratropium (nasal)


  • Ipratropium nasal spray is used to help stop a runny nose caused by rhinitis.

Ipratropium nasal spray is used to help stop a runny nose caused by rhinitis. Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nose which could be because of an allergy (such as hayfever) or other reasons.

Before using ipratropium nasal spray

Before using ipratropium nasal make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
  • If you have glaucoma.
  • If you have prostate problems.
  • If you have cystic fibrosis.
  • If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.

How to use ipratropium nasal spray

Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet. The usual dose is two sprays in each nostril, two to three times a day.

  1. Blow your nose gently.
  2. Remove the cap from the container. (If this is the first time you have used the spray, or if you have not used your spray for more than seven days, press the pump several times until you see a fine spray.)
  3. Keep your head upright and insert the nozzle of the spray into one nostril.
  4. Push down firmly on the pump to administer one spray.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 in the other nostril.
  6. Wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap after use.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Avoid spraying ipratropium nasal spray near your eyes. If any of the spray accidentally gets into your eyes, wash it out with cold tap water for several minutes.
  • Do not use this nasal spray more often than your doctor or pharmacist recommends. This can increase the risk of side-effects.
  • If you buy any medicines, check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with ipratropium nasal spray.

Can ipratropium nasal spray cause problems?

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.

How to store ipratropium nasal spray

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Important information about all medicines


  • Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken an overdose of this medicine, go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.
  • If you are having an operation or dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking.
  • This medicine is for you. Never give it to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
  • Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Take them to your local pharmacy which will dispose of them for you.
  • If you have any questions about this medicine ask your pharmacist.
