Vitamin B12 Deficiency

  1. following recent routine blood test, my GP said I was deficient in Vitamin B12. Rather than go straight to injections, she suggested I buy some Vitamins. I have got some Vit B, but can't seem to locate Vit B12 tablets. does anyone know if taking Vit B is OK, or if not where can I get Vit B12?

I am 63 yrs old and consider that I eat a good varied diet (fish etc)

  2. Hi SallyAnne,

Please go straight for the injections. You can get B12 tablets but they are nowhere near as effective as the injections. This is too serious a condition to waste time trying other forms of treatment as you may develop nerve damage.

Ask for the injections and make sure your folate level is also good. If it is no more than low normal, then you should ask for a 5mg folic acid supplement as folate is needed in good supply for the metabolism of B12, and it is nearly always low or deficient in those with a B12 deficiency.

Have you been given a reason for the deficiency, such as gastric antibodies? Also, what are your symptoms? If you are experiencing fatigue, dizziness, bowel/bladder problems or pins & needles, then it is all the more important that you have the injections.

    I hope this helps.
