Should I take Ramipril ?

  1. I am pretty active 66 year old male and enjoy jogging, skiing and swimming. I am also a retired engineer but now have part-time carers job. At my recent diabetes 6 monthly check-up the nurse was pleased with my Blood Sugar 6.6, Cholesterol 4.5 and Blood Pressure 120/77 so I though I was in the clear. However she mentioned the blood test showed my Kidney egfr reading was 63% and that normal would be 90%. The doctor has looked at my blood results and has prescribed Ramipril (1.25g), but after reading some of the comments about the side effects, now I‘m not too sure whether I will take up her offer.

I do suffer from tinnitus and note that comments from people suggest that it can worsen this condition. I do not take any medication for my diabetes. I checked through my previous egrf readings and they have been at this level for a number of years. My understanding is that egrf readings are something to do with blood flow rate through the kidneys, and taking this drug may improve this condition. Any comments from people in similar position to me would be welcome.

  2. I am in a similar position. I was on Perindopril for years and nicely controlling my blood pressure, and no side efects. I am a 52 year old male, also active. My new Doctor has prescribed Ramipril now and told me to take a half dose for a week then the full dose from then on. I am only 2 days into this half dose and so far no side effects. I am having the weekend off from my usual running and swimming before work but will resume again on Tuesday and see how I get on.
