scheuermann's

  1. I am a 42 year old woman and was diagnosed with the disease when I was 24. Initially it was thought that I had 2 slipped discs whilst pregnant. Unable to do anything until the baby was born I had to suffer incredible pain (as you well know). I was fobbed off with Brufen Retard by the GP until I was violently ill due to the useage. It was finally diagnosed when the physio sent me for x-rays. I have the damage in 3 places, neck, shoulders and lower spine.

I was referred to the hospital to see a 'professional' who told me that the damage was caused when I was a teenager and should not be causing me pain now! I was told that I could see a psychologist to 'help with the pain' threrefore more or less told to go away.

My GP then referred me to another hospital's pain clinic were I receive acupuncture, which is bliss, but only lasts for the duration of the needles being in my skin.

I also have problems with my feet, being told to loose weight would help, but after doing my own research have found that it is indicative of osteocondritis anyway, so once again left alone to deal with the pain.

I have a condition with my eyes in that the corneas are eroding. I have since found out by a medico that this is also part and parcel of the condition.

There doesn't appear to be any continuity in advice or support from the medical profession. However, there does seem to be a great deal of ignorance!

  2. Couldn't agree more. I was diagnosed in 1972. Things have improved since then. I am currently on a medication called Lyrica which is the only med that has helped with the pain. I also have aveydic massage which helps keep the hump under control.

  3. Hi

    My first comment.

I am a 29 year old male currently serving in the armed forces and am in a similar position as yourself. I've

been experiencing aches and pains for the past two years. 6months after presenting I got sent to the "head

doc". Got put on all sorts of pills including anti psychotics! Any way two months ago I demanded X-rays!!

To the disbelief of the docs I was right! Diagnosed with scheueremanns and then had an MRI and I also have degenerative disc disease!! After all this I'm still being sent here there and everywhere getting knowhere!

Frustrating! Please keep me posted on how you're doing.

    Hope things are improving

  4. Hi

I am glad I have found this forum I have not been able to find any useful information since being diagnosed with Scheuermann's this year at the age of 37.

My doctor originally thought I had Ankylosing Spondylitis and sent me of for an MRI which showed Scheuermann's. I was also told that this was juvenile disease and should not really be causing me any problems, The MRI showed that I have damage all the way down my spine as well as degenerative disc disease.

I am in constant pain especially during the night and it is making me depressed. Doctors do not seem to understand the pain that comes with this condition I have been taking co codamol 30/500 as well as Lyrica and still having back pain.

I also get a lot of pain in my lower ribs and also feet. I am awaiting an appointment with my local hospital pain clinic so hopefully they can help.

  5. Hi I am 42 and was diagnosed in 1994, 10 years after campaigning for an mri scan. Finally got the diagnosis, which was missed after a doctors assessed me as a 10 year old. Was told i was lazy and not standing up correctly. Also have osteoarthritis of the neck and spine, and earlier this year was diagnosed with fibromyalgia......am almost at the point of giving up!!!!

There is not a lot of help available for scheuermanns, mainly pain management and pain killers, which for some are not the way forward. surgery is now not an option, as the bones have deteriorated to crumbling stage, therefor putting them at risk from shattering.

Everyday is a major struggle, and i have also read numerous times that by adult hood, pain should have subsided a bit.....which is just so not true. I am aware that my other conditions cause me very similar pain and symptoms, but i have daily bouts of pain, that can never seem to be relieved.

I am glad I am not alone
