Ovarian cyst.. How long to wait?

  1. Hi everyone,

    Iv been experiencing pain on my right hand side since about November. It started off as more of a nagging feeling rather then pain but I experienced alot of nausea. Every now and again I would get a sharp pain shooting through my side that would last about 10 seconds and would cripple me. I went to my doctor and the end of January and she took my of my contraception, iv been on the depo injection for 12months, and booked me an ultrascan in case it was a ovarian cyst. 6 weeks later and Iv had my scan and it couldn't of come sooner, the pain has got even worst in my right hand side, the nausea has got stronger and I cant have sex with my boyfriend as the pain is unbearable. At my scan yesterday the nurse said she could see a cyst on my right ovary and it was inflamed thats why the internal scan was hurting me too but she said she couldnt give me any more information as the scans cant show you that much but it maybe a twisted cyst or it may not even be the cyst causing me pain but maybe my apendix. So now Iv got to wait until the 21st March (13 days after my scan) to get my results from my normal doctor. Now i'm really worried as I know its a cyst but I have no other information. If it was something bad would she have told me then and there or is this standard practice? I think she may have knocked it more with the internal scan as Im in double the pain I was before, lying down it even hurts and going to the toilet gives me the feeling like something is going to burst inside of me. Should i try and get another doctors appointment and see if i can get something for the pain? Any replies would be really appreciated!

Yes try and make an earlier appointment, an emergency appointment if need be, if your GP practice is the kind that forces you to ring at 8 am (or similar time) in the morning ring and keep ringing (by pressing your telephones redial button) until you get through,, the redial button is a godsend and you should get through within 10 minutes,, if it's engaged hang up instantly and press the redial button ;D

  3. Oh... If they ask what the 'emergency' is tell them you are in intractable / unmanageable pain,, it'll also help if you cry about the pain,, a bunch of Tramadol and Paracetamol should ease your suffering, maybe even some Antibiotics as well wink

    I also have some cysts diagnosed recently and in answer to your question if there is something wrong they do respond quickly, if the ultrasound tech sees somehting they think is of concern your results are fasttracked back to the GP (as quickly as the same day or next day) If they are referring you to a specialist then the specialist will get the referal and a decision will be made based on the information that they have as to how quick your seen.

    In the mean time you need to ask them to address your pain issue and ask for pain relief.

    I have a cyst of 14cm that needs to be removed and also a bunch of smaller cysts that need to be more closely looked at for diagnosis. Its easy to get overwhelmed and start panicking but try to keep things in perspective and keep calm, Good Luck x

  7. Yes! You wait THIRTEEN days just for your GP to see you. - that is dreadful.... then he/she refers you to a consultant, that'll be ANOTHER goodness knows how long......and all the time you are in pain! What part of the country are you in?

    It does sound like standard practice though. The nurses are not allowed to tell you what they find as that is left for more highly qualified medics who will have your whole medical history. So anyway it sounds like you have a cyst which may be twisted and/or bleeding, causing the pain. I had that once, was doubled up with pain, and had it taken out in hospital three weeks later.

    They routinely test it to see if it is benign. There's no cause to be worrying.

  8. Hello, I was glad to see your post as I am still awaiting answers on my weird pain. Can you describe the pain a bit more?

    My pain is just above my hip and deep inside my abdomen. The pain is sharp, twisting and bulging - like something is being squeezed. I thought hernia, appendix, kidney??? When I get the pain badly is usually when I'm in bed lying on my right side and it's excruciating. Afterwards the area feels really bruised and aches all the time.

    I've had some blood in my wee lately so the doctor has organised a scan of my kidneys but the blood has now cleared and the pain remains.

    I had a scan a year ago as my periods were horrendous and they found nothing abnormal but because I had a scan then the doctor keeps saying that there can't be any cysts or fibroids as they don't grow that fast in a year (??).

    Awaiting my scan appointment and I shall have to ask them nicely to have a look at my pelvis too as well as kidneys.

  9. If the nurse said she saw an ovarian cyst, inflamed, then you have to believe her. Your kidneys are just under your ribs on either side of your spine. I didn't know a scan could detect inflammation though, but it would explain the pain.

    My own experience was a couple of weeks of grumbling pains lowish down on left abdomen. They got quite bad so one day I saw the doctor, who prescribed something to "settle my stomach".

    Went home and later that day decided to hang some new curtains. Reaching up I was gripped by severe pain and crawled downstairs to the phone, saying come quickly, pain awful, maybe appendicitis.

    Doc was unable to do complete exam because of the pain but said he had felt something . got strong painkillers and saw him again few days later. he confirmed his initial finding and referred me to hosp , and I went in 2 or 3 weeks later. It was cyst size of grapefruit and benign. Other things were not benign so I got a hysterectomy thrown in.

    Hope you don't have to be kept in suspense much longer as it must be very worrying for you.

    Many thanks for all your replies! So I was told my results on Wednesday just gone and the doctor told me that they had found a cyst (which I knew anyway as the nurse told me!) but it looked 'normal' and she would just refer me back for another ultra scan in 8 weeks as they dont tend to rush into anything with cyst because some times they just go on there on. Now I understand this but I have been complaining about the pain since november so Im sure its not going to just disapear. The doctor said she could understand why I always felt sick though and asked me to do a pregnancy test which I already had done 3 of and was about 99.9% sure i wasn't pregnant. That came back negative (what a suprise!) so she took a blood test from me but I now have to wait until monday to hear the results. I feel like I'm just going around in circles and no one is helping me. I know my own body and I know something is not right, I just hope they can find out what is causing all this soon.

I had a cyst suddenly appear after being diagnosed with a bulge on my femoral canal (femoral hernia), my first private ultrasound carried out by a top Radiologist said I had no cysts but a bulge on my femoral canal when I coughed. My MRI carried out 4 weeks later which again I had to pay for privately and covered all my pelvic area suddenly showed a cyst. The cyst had suddenly appeared since I had excrutiating pain in my righthand lower abdomen side. Me being me, I have tried to pop it as I consider it a boil and it cant be that big at present since I only had it for 4 weeks. I have now felt some stinging but I havent the faintest idea if I got rid of the cyst or not. I am not advocating that you try and pop your cyst but sometimes they appear as maybe a warning sign that something isnt right, not necessarily the problem that is causing the pain. I suspect the cyst is near my femoral canal and the hole and bulge are causing the cyst. I have been taking it easy lately and I dont have any pain in my groin area at the moment just stinging. I do have periods that are now heavier than usual, thrush, bowels are playing up and bladder infections plus less control in the bowel. I have read so many horror stories about hernia operations going wrong that I am holding back from getting the op. also the doctors never suggest hernias in women.

  12. Hi Miss S, my last reply was a bit unspecific so thought I had better be a bit clearer. I have a femoral hernia see "femoral hernia" or "hernia" posted some interesting articles. You get a pain on your righthand side, or you could get a pain on your left or both. There are very simple causes like, overdoing it at the gym, lifting heavy objects, running I could go on (I have listed them). You may well have a cyst and that is causing you the problems and you could probably tell by my last reply I am not that concerned about a cyst and I have been told mine is a "normal" one. You havent really mentioned your age, or symptoms, if any so I really cant tell. Right groin pain can be kidney, appendix, gallstones, the list is endless but if you start having tests and they rule out most things then have a look at my post. Its just to keep women informed as the doctors, radiologists, consultants can have a bit of a blank when it comes to women with hernias. The intestine can come out and then go back in, making no obvious diagnosis. I dont think I suffered nausea, but it was very painful, the top of my thigh appeared to be painful but it will depend where you ruptured yourself and whats near it. All my symptoms have now subsided but my "hole" cannot mend completely so no doubt I will be back in A&E at some point.
