I need some help and advice

  1. Hi im Cloe, first timer at this. I am 19 and have just been told that i have a 8cm cyst on my right ovary caused by the contraceptive injection a few years ago. I have been told by the doctor that he is going to operate as soon as possible but thinks that my ovary is going to be so badly damaged that he is going to need to remove that aswell. I am so scared and have no one to turn to who won't just tell me it is going to be ok. Family and friends have been brilliant but at the age on 19 i never thought this would be happening to me. I just don't know what to do all i seem to be doing at the moment is crying and feeling sorry for myself which isn't me at all .. any advise???

  2. Hi Cloe, Let me allay your fears. Firstly 19 can be such a precious age as all this is new and important to you. But don't worry as these cysts are so very common and it is not necessarily caused by a contraceptive injection. It's a possibility that's all. Most cysts can be removed safely, quickly & easily and will not affect your future fertility. Ovarian cysts usually do not affect a woman's ability to conceive.

Even if the cyst is larger and needs to be removed, this is usually done using laparoscopy, which preserves a woman's fertility. I don't like the sound of the approach that your doctor has taken and with such a negative attitude towards such a young person as yourself. Was this your GP? Or have you seen a surgeon? Whatever the answer is I would definitely seek a second opinion. If it was your GP have a change it can do no harm at all. Sometimes it helps you to weigh things up more easily. See a woman doctor if you can too. If it was a surgeon, ask your doctoe to refer you to someone else as you felt upset by what the one you saw. All is not as bad as you think, truly.
