Hypothyroid medication

  1. Hi, I'm new here but so glad I found this site. I have had an under active thyroid for about three year[possibly a lot longer.] I started on levothyroxine ,gradually increasing the dose to 125mcg.The blood tests are coming back in the "normal" range but the symptoms are still with me. Last week I visited me G.P. who said perhaps a different medication would suit me better. He didn't name the medication but was looking for a conversion table, which he could not find. He said he would contact me re a new prescription, which he failed to do.So today I rang him just to find he had changed his mind.WHY!! Is it because this medication would cost him more?

has anyone else had a similar experience? !!!

  2. Hi, as far as I know there is no alternative. Levo is not a medication - its thyroxine (synthesised ) which is what your body is not producing, so there is no alternative

It takes about 6 weeks for the effects to show

    Thanks

  3. There is an alternative, some patients find having T3 (Liothyroxine) beneficial when taken with their levothyroxine (T4), before putting you on the combination, your dr needs to test your TSH, T4 and T3 levels, you can show perfectly normal TSH and T4 but low T3, meaning that your body is not coverting the T4 (levothyroxine) into enough T3. Most people have no issues with the levo, but some people just cant covert it. I have been on levo for over 5 years, and have been symptomatic the whole time, and have had an endocronilogist test my levels, and found I was not having enough T3, so I have had my T4 reduced, and introduced T3 to compensate.

  4. Thank you for your replies, I feel I can take this further now.
