Hyperthyroidism Newly Diagnosed

  1. Hi,

I have just found out that I an hyperthyroid completely by accident, having attended a routine medical. Of course I now realise I did have some symptoms having looked it up! Possibly even building up over the past 10 years since the birth of my first child. My results were:

    T4 37.0 pmol/L

    TSH 0.01 mu/L

    TPO 524.8 iu/mL

I was lucky to get a quick referral to an Endo through my private insurance cover, and he wants me to have an RAIU test to determine the cause before starting any medication. Are there any risks associated with this test? He said it was completely safe but of course when you search online you find all sorts of stuff.

If anyone could share their experiences of this with me that would be great, Thanks.

  2. Hello Chris, I haven't had the test you mention but if you post on Overactive Thyroid Graves Part 4 page (I think that's what its called) you will find many of us fellow sufferers on there and someone may be able to advise you.

I hope you get on ok and are able to start treatment very soon..

    Regards

    Bess.

  3. Thanks Bess, I had the uptake scan this week - it wasn't that scary in the end, although my daughter gave me a wide berth all day as she was worried I was radioactive! Just waiting for the results to confirm whether or not it's Graves. If so I'll certainly check out Overactive Thyroid Graves Part 4.

    Kind regards, Chris
