Gout

  1. I recently went on holiday to Hawaii and had my first Gout attack. During the flight to New York I started getting sevre pains in my left toe. I thought that I had stubbed it at some stage. It was almost 24 hours of unbeleivable pain before I got to a doctor in Honolulu. After some questions he diagnosed Gout. He gave me a 'cortesone (think that's how you spell it) injection and some anti inflamitary tablets. The pain went within the hour and never came back, until the return journey, when I started to get pains in my right knee. My GP put me on a course of Brufin which done the trick. I keep getting a 'stabbing' sensation on my big toe. Is this the first sign of an attack or just paranoia?

I would not advise flying during a Gout attack. My foot swoll to the size of a melon!

  2. I am an irregular gout sufferer but recently had my most severe attack. This occured when I flew to the Caribbean ( 9 hr. flight) and I wondered whether the pressurisation of the Aircraft had anything to do with it. Before the flight I had a meal of scampi/shrimps and having heard that shellfish can cause gout I susspected that and/or the above. The gout was just tolerable at that time. A few days later I had lobster and 24 hrs later the real, agonising pain started with swelling of both my feet. Had to go and see the ship's doctor as it was the worst attack I ever had. Got me some pills which helped.

My question to you, jed is - did you eat shellfish before or during the flight ?
