From T4 4 to T4 69 in 2 weeks - confused!!

  1. Hello, I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in December 2011 by an endocrinologist at my local hospital and was put on 40mg Carbimazole daily and told to have a blood test 6 weeks later.

The result at 6 weeks was that my T4 had dropped to 4 and I was told to cease the Carbimazole and return to the hospital for another blood test in 4 weeks.

However, just 2 weeks later I felt awful; puffy weeping eyes, had shooting pains, could barely walk and felt, frankly, suicidal!

So, (exactly 2 weeks after being told to stop Carbimazole) I went back to my very good and extremely efficient, GP who ordered a blood test which I had at 4pm that afternoon at the local surgery. The GP called me at 6pm (told you he was efficient!) and said that my T4 was now 69.

Over the phone he prescribed 5mg of carbimazole (and Bisoprolol) and told me to go back to the hospital for my next scheduled blood test which is in 2 weeks time.

Please can someone tell me if this is normal treatment and normal reaction, I am confused because I have swung so wildly one way and then the other! I had read that doing so was not good for ones health or state of mind! Thank goodness for my local GP who has been very involved and also somewhat surprised that since my inital meeting in December with the endocrinologist at the hospital, my next scheduled appointment is not until May, due to annual leave!!

  2. Sorry, new to this, forgot to say that my very first blood test result in December the T4 level was 49, so 6 weeks later it had dropped to 4 and 2 weeks later (after stopping Carbimazole) it was 69

  3. Hi - Feel sorry for you. Back in 1996 ish I was diagnosed with the same condition.

Initally I was told I was in premature menopause cus I was weepy, sucidal, sweats etc. I was put on 5mg carbimazole to block my thyroid from working and then was given 125mg thyroxine - my T4 was then about 77 and my TSH 0.01 (unmeasurable they said) - My endocrinologist said this was to try to kick start my thyroid into working normally.

I was on this form of treatment for two years but nothing happened and in 2001 I had a totally thyroidectomy leaving my parathyroid glands though (these regulate your body's calcium levels) and been on 125-150mg thyroxine ever since and have never felt so good.

BEWARE prolonged use of carbimazole could possible give you stomach problems - it did to me - I was changed on to a more expensive block medication but that also aggrivated my stomach painfully thats why the decision was taken to take mine out as I was unable to stay on the block and replace treatment indefinately.

You suprise me that you only have 6weekly blood tests though I had to have tests every two weeks. Use your GP as he/she sounds as he/she seems to have the same sort of attitude that mine had - yes I never saw my endrocrinologist for periods of 6 - 9 weeks but my doctor managed my medication and tests extremely well.

You don't say what age you are - I was 45 when my thyroid went awol - My youngest daughter had the same problem as me at 22 - had the same treatment but her thyroid eventually settled down and has been that way for the last 8 years - So it can calm down and go back to normal.

Hope I have been able to help in some way and not put the fear of god into you. Living without a thyroid is nothing you just have to remember to take your thyroxine every morning - hopefully though you will be like my daughter and settle back to normal.
