Blepharitis - Treatment options

  1. Long term resistant Chronic form treatment.

After looking at the research on Google Scholar.

The following had a positive effect. Whether this is a long term effect is not yet proven.

    - Omega 3 daily 1,000mg (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2646454/)

    - Canesten anti fungal cream. (Outer lid use only).

    What didn't work

    - Cloramphenicol - Failed

    - Fucithalmic - Failed

    - Baby shampoo - Failed utterly pointless (there is no scientific evidence for this having any effect, why is it recommended (placebo)? It sometimes gives the impression of working but is actually just the natural progression over time. I suspect it gets you out of the waiting room.

    - Broad spectrum systemic antibiotic - Failed

The implications are that the form I have, does not have exclusively, or even partially, a bacterial cause but is a combination of increasing age related biochemical imbalance leading to fungal susceptibility. The truth is, more sciencitic studies are needed.

  2. Your message was a tonic as I too have tried most of your "solutions" after GP interventions and with the same negative impact on my eye problem. I have also suspected that my condition has worsened as I have aged ( I am 68). The baby shampoo was, I believe, simply a method of instilling good eye hygiene which would clense the lids of any sloughing but with no lasting impact on the condition. I'll try the omega 3 as it could also benefit my joint pain. Thanks, Ben
